I just read The Straits Times’ 44 Reasons to Love Singapore (or something like that). So I’m going to make my own list now! Yup, here's my national day post. Just a few off my head 'cause I'm too lazy to think right now. (LMAO LOOK AT HOW BORED I AM. NAH, I LOVE SINGAPORE TOO OKAY. And by the way, my TVants doesn’t seem to be working but I want to watch Inkigayo LIVE. BOO.)

Reasons to Love Singapore (for me, at least) :

all in the name of national day )

HAPPY NATIONAL DAY, SINGAPORE AND FELLOW SINGAPOREANS. :D

LOL I totally abandoned this because of Inkigayo. I certainly know my priorities. INKIGAYO WAS AWESOME TODAY, BY THE WAY, EVEN THOUGH I ONLY STARTED WATCHING IT HALFWAY. THANKS, [info]heesica , for the link to watch it. Yay. I need to re-watch those performances in HD.

I wanted to bitch blog about my trip to the Da Vinci exhibition on Wednesday, but as you can see, the monster of procrastination has taken over again.

Of course, I'm not going to bitch about the exhibition itself. Why, the exhibition was ALL SORTS OF AWESOME. :D Go for it, people! For the uninformed, its at the Science Centre, 15 dollars per entry. Before you get all "OMG WTF 15 DOLLARS?! I CAN BUY THREE KFC MEALS WITH IT..." or sth, let me just say, I thought it was well worth my money. I learnt many interesting things about Leonardo Da Vinci that I didn't know before. It was quite cool. No, this is not a geek speaking, this is coming from a non-geek okay, so you can trust me. (:

I wouldn't reveal too much about the exhibition, in case some of you haven't gone yet and are planning to go. But these key aspects of the exhibition should be enough to draw you in:

1) Revealing of 25 secrets about the Mona Lisa painting. (Her hair isn't big, but yes, its FULL OF SECRETS.) Basically, they analysed the shit out of the painting. Its like a freaking Mona Lisa shrine in that particular section. LOL, sorry for the crude phrasing, but yeah. The exhibition also explains the painting, and gives the history of it. I didn't realise so much planning and calculating goes into that painting?? Cool.

2) The Vitruvian Man image and its explanation. Which was damn interesting.

3) His many inventions. Literally. Many. Inventions. (There are some hands-on stuff that you can try out in order to understand his concepts for the inventions, it was quite fun. We were like, "OMG WE CAN FINALLY TOUCH THE DISPLAYS." LOL.)

4) The Last Supper painting.

5) Huge-ass reproductions of Da Vinci's drawings of the human anatomy. THIS IS AMAZING. He drew everything so precisely omg. I think I recall a line that says something like how Da Vinci worked in secret and hurried conditions with 30(?) human bodies to do those drawings. Erm, something along those lines. I might have remembered wrongly, please don't take my word for it and check it out yourself if you can. (:

6) His other works.

Oh, and since this is an exhibition in Singapore, you shouldn't be expecting the real goods. LOL. For the real Mona Lisa painting, please make your way to Louvre museum, thanks. But overall, I thought it was a really interesting and comprehensive exhibition that allowed me to regard Da Vinci as more than just an arts person. He made contributions in many other areas like science, engineering, etc etc, so I was really quite amazed after I walked out of the exhibition.

small rant )

Okay, I should probably go to bed. Locals, get your ass to the exhibition! I thought it was quite informative and fascinating. :D

I don't know if its a good or bad thing that the Circle Line opened. For the uninformed, the Circle Line links the new stations to the North-South Line/Red Line and the North-East Line/Purple Line (ITS LOOKS LIKE, PURPLE LINE!! GOT TO INTRODUCE MYSELF! Sorry, couldn't resist). So its like, Marymount-Bishan-Lorong Chuan-Serangoon-Bartley. Wait, did I miss anything out? Okay, whatever.

Anyway, ever since it opened, I have been abusing it like nobody's business.

Have to go Dhoby gaut, oh yay I can take the train and switch at Serangoon to the NEL.
Have to go Cityhall/Orchard/Somerset, oh yay I can take the train and switch at Bishan to the NSL.
Have to go Bishan, oh yay its just a 2 minutes train ride.
Have to go Kovan, oh yay its just 2 stops away.

Damn. And I was still one of those who proudly proclaimed my love affair with buses and how buses >>>> trains.

I'm such a.....HYPOCRITE! /cries and runs away dramatically

The good thing about the Circle Line is that it takes me lesser time to get to places. ITS JUST TOO CONVENIENT. And its not very crowded, I LIKE. :D (However, this means that the empty seats are kinda unnecessary to me though, since the ride is so short. LMAO.) The not-so-good thing is, I end up underestimating the time needed to travel, so ultimately, I will still be late. -.- How annoying. And because the train station is just right behind my house, I feel the need to use it all the time even though I might have a straight bus to a particular place. So for example, I have a straight bus to somewhere in Sengkang. But, to save time, I will take the train and drop off at Kovan, and then take a bus to that somewhere in Sengkang, because that's faster. Like, maybe 10 minutes faster. LOL. So higher transport expenses for that 10 minutes. Okay, you can shoot me now.

If you've read through my entire love-hate affair with the Circle Line, YOU ARE...GOOD JOB. (A pat on the back if you know where this is from.) To reward you, I have a hilarious video for you that I totally lol-ed at earlier today when I saw it. I NEED TO POST THIS BECAUSE ITS JUST TOO LOL. Here, its only 6 seconds. Blink and you'll miss it.

LOL JAEJOONG. )

(Whoo finally a post. Though its about pointless stuff. But I rarely feel the urge to blog these days, so I'm kinda pleased with myself now. HAHAHA.)

Add/Drop period is over, and sad to say, I didn't manage to get the module that I wanted. Despite me having the STARS planner page on whenever I'm online and refreshing it when I remember to. LOL. Oh well, life's never fair. Guess I'll just have to try again next semester!

Last week was...a blur. Not that it passed so fast that it was a blur, but I just have no idea what I did. LOL. It was Welcome Week in school and I spent my free time in school at my CCA booth. I *think* we were supposed to be like actively pulling people off their way to lectures and tutorials, but somehow we just sort of... I don't know, sat there and talked among ourselves? LOL. Or when we were too sleepy in the morning or too tired later on to talk, we just sat there, fanned ourselves, and tried to do some reading. Hahahaha. Not our fault okay. The heat was so overwhelming that we didn't feel like doing anything but just sat there. But...! People still came and asked about us, so it wasn't a total failure. Yay. Hahaha. I know, like still dare to say right.

So, third week of school. Now, I feel like school has officially started.

Oh and guess what?! I think I'm behind in my readings already! LOL.

(The Patriarch, anyone? I haven't even finish one-quarter of it and I think Prof Koh is already moving on to Memories of a Nonya this week. OMG.)

Edit:

I almost forgot. After 2 weeks of taking public transport to school, I realised I'm generally okay with it. Just that I don't understand SMRT's system.

During the morning peak hour, they have trains that will stop at Yishun. (I'm supposed to take to Jurong East.) So for example, I missed a train. The next one comes in 3 minutes, and will 'terminate at Yishun'. Means I cannot take it. I have to take the next one, which comes in 5 minutes after the Yishun train leaves. Meaning I waited...8 minutes for a train...during PEAK HOUR?! And the dumb thing is the Yishun train is quite empty because most people's destinations are after Yishun. So end up even MORE PEOPLE squeezed into the train towards JE ('cause more people come up the platform as time passes). I wonder if SMRT knows about this.

Similarly for the evening peak hour, when I want to take train at JE, they have trains that terminate at Yew Tee or something. When alot of people are taking to places like Woodlands, Yishun, Ang Mo Kio to go home. *faints

I wanted to post about this yesterday but I decided against it.

SHINE FOR SINGAPORE, this year's National Day song. Nothing against Joi Chua or Hady, but I don't really like the tune of this year's song. Wait, what's the tune again? LOL okay I can't rmbr already, but I just know that I didn't like it despite hearing it a million times. And...what was 2007's National Day song?? Is it just my poor memory or are the National Day songs not very memorable in these recent years? I do think they should take a look at the older National Day songs and come up with a good one next year. (:

A good National Day song, in my opinion, should:
1. Have a nice and catchy tune that is easy to remember and sing. (None of those weird ones like the one that Taufik and Rui En sang. OMG I can never rmbr that tune even RIGHT AFTER the song ended. A waste of Rui En's good vocals.)
2. Have lyrics that are meaningful yet we can still rmbr them after years.
3. Make me feel proud of the Singapore culture and heritage. In other words, induce the patriot in me! LOL. (Not that I need a song to make me feel like that...but you know what I mean.)
4. Have a well-shot video that reeks of Truly Singapore!

By the way, this version is damn LOL. Especially LOL are Celest Chong and Stella Ng here. I don't know the other 2 guys.

And I saw this in the Related Videos. Damn LOL also. LOOK AT FANN WONG. HAHAHA.

Guess the oldies are really better. In my opinion lah. Not sure about you guys. Though most sane people would agree with me. Hahaha.

HAPPY 43RD BIRTHDAY, SINGAPORE!

This year's national day was a quiet affair with us watching the parade on tv at my aunt's house. I guess the good thing was that it was an excuse to have steamboat! (: LOL. But watching the parade kind of made me wish I was there. Or even near there. And to think I was complaining last year that it was so freaking crowded and sweaty around the Esplanade when we went to watch fireworks. Sigh stupid Janesa. If only she's here I'm sure we'll make plans again. Hahaha.

Sighting of the day:

2 kids behaving like lovebirds on a bus. Hahaha. I swear they look like the most the most, Secondary 1. (Plus the guy boy was holding a BEIGE ezlink card.)

So...they're still at the age where, you know, girls look older than guys 'cause guys are still skinny, puny, little asses? At first when they came up the bus and sat in front of me I thought they were siblings. I was still thinking to myself, wah the sister so nice, bring her brother out. Haha. Then they started to act like they're not siblings. (I'm sorry if they really are siblings. I don't normally see brothers and sisters being so touchy feely, but if they are then.....okaaay.) And I wanted to LOL when the girl had to slide down so much on her seat in order to put her head on that boy's small shoulder. I could tell she was pretty uncomfortable because she sat up a few times, and also kept adjusting herself. I wonder if she had a crick in her neck after the entire journey. Hahaha.

Yup. FEEL THE LOVE. It's National Day! (:

P.S: If I hear this year's National Day song one more time, Shine For Singapore or something, I think I'm going to start hitting people.

This is quite random, but anyway, I found these stuff while researching for a school project.

The myths of a few islands around Singapore! Hahaha. I think all of us have heard of these before, in primary school? But it was interesting reading about it again, sort of like refreshing my memory. (:

KUSU ISLAND
There was once a Chinese fisherman who lived on the island of Singapura. His family was poor so he had to go out to sea everyday to catch fish to sell. One day, although there was a thunderstorm, he insisted on going out to sea, against his wife's advice.
(Tsk tsk. I guess all stories must start with disobeying/not listening to loved ones' advice)

The choppy waters and heavy rain made it very difficult to fish. The fisherman's little boat swayed vigorously from side to side. As he was about to throw his net into the sea, a huge wave rocked his boat, causing him to lose his balance and fall into the sea. "God, please help me!" he screamed in the water (How the hell do you scream in the water??), "Who is going to take care of my wife and children?" (Hmm. Drama much?)

Just when the fisherman was about to give up, a large turtle swam slowly towards him. It was the biggest turtle he had ever seen! To his surprise, the turtle signalled to him to climb onto its back and carried him safely to a nearby island.

The Chinese fisherman soon made the island his home. He was able to live quite well, as fruits grew abundantly on the island. (Ehh what happened to the 'wife and children' sia??!!)

One stormy day, while the fisherman was resting, he heard a loud cry. "Help! Help! I am drowning!" a man cried. Guess what the fisherman saw? The same turtle that helped him was carrying a Malay fisherman to the island!

The two men soon became good friends. (Ah well. It'll be quite sad if they were enemies when they're the only 2 people on the island right?) They spent their time hunting for animals and fruits. (Exciting hobby.)

To thank the turtle for saving their lives, the two men built a Chinese temple, a Malay shrine and a huge turtle sculpture, all of which can still be found on Kusu Island, which is also known as Turtle Island. (Chinese temple and Malay shrine only?? Selfish ah they all. Only think for themselves. What about Christians and Hindus who might want to visit too?)

Today, during the ninth month of the lunar calendar (usually October in the calendar we use now), many Chinese go to Kusu Island to pray to Tua Pek Kong, the deity of prosperity, at the Chinese temple.

Oops. Couldn't resist adding in my own comments.

SISTERS' ISLAND
A long time ago lived a pair of beautiful sisters, Minah & Lina, who shared a bond so strong that nothing can separate them. But one day, the notorious chief of the Orang Laut met and fell in love with Lina. Despite the sisters' pleas, the chief took her away and forced her into the sampan. Just then, the sky turned dark and a storm broke out. As Minah made a final attempt to save her sister from leaving the jetty, a large wave came and engulfed her. On seeing this, Lina freed herself from her captors and jumped into the sea to join Minah.

The storm subsided but nowhere can the sisters be found. Instead, two islands emerged from where they had drowned. Called Subar Laut (3.9 ha) & Subar Darat (1.7ha), the two small islands are now known as Sisters' Islands . It was said that every year on that very day when the sisters turned into islands, there will always be storm and rain.

PULAU HANTU
There were once two great warriors locked in a fierce battle at sea. Many people died and the blue seas slowly became polluted with human blood, upsetting the Jinns at the bottom of the ocean. In anger, one powerful Jinn created a whirlpool and sucked the 2 warriors into the deep sea to drown them. Not deterred, they continued their battle. (Wah. They so pro can fight in water?!) Suddenly, the Jinn sprayed water on one of them (LOL!), and the other warrior seeing his opponent blinded, thrusted his sword into his abdomen. (Shit he is so 贱, someone should smack him.) At the same time, the wounded warrior forced his sword into the other man. (This guy should be the real pro. He's wounded yet he can stab the other guy! This makes the uninjured guy seem so weak. Get killed by a wounded person. Sigh.) Both collapsed and died.

The gods felt it was wrong for the sea spirits to interfere in human affairs, thus, the Jinn transformed the two warriors into islets so that their spirits can continue to live on them. As one of the warriors was smaller than the other
(Seems kinda ego-bruising to me. The islands are named according to their size? /:), his islet was known as "Pulau Hantu Kecil" while the bigger one was called "Pulau Hantu Besar".

Remember these myths now?? (: I didn't know about the Pulau Hantu one though. But the Kusu Island's myth is classic, man. Looks like the turtles in the past were a lot smarter and more useful than turtles now.

26 December 2007 @ 11:18 am

Date: 20th December, Thursday
Venue: The Science Centre, Singapore

We were trying to think of new places to go to celebrate Serene's birthday, and ta-dah! So there we were at the Science Centre at 2 plus in the afternoon. Xiao Ji: "Wah Science Centre got more people than Escape [theme park]!" After queuing for tickets and having lunch at Macs, we finally started on our excursion. HAHAHA. But don't worry, we weren't holding hands, two by two.

The Science Centre was mad fun! Which explains the pathetic amount of pictures we took, because we were so fascinated by everything that we didn't even think of taking pictures. There were too many things to look at, too many things to touch, too many things to try. (: They really know how to put science in a different perspective, and make it fun for everybody, not just kids.

So here are the few pictures that we took. After taking out XJ's camwhoring pictures of herself only, I'm afraid I don't have many pictures left. Haha!

Now, wasn't that pathetic? Because we went to hundreds of exhibits, and they were super interesting! The photos that you just saw were just to safisfy our camwhoring needs. I guess they were also taken when that exhibit wasn't particularly exciting, and when we realise we don't have many pictures. LOL. So excuse me for putting up so many pictures of the same thing, just taken with different people. Hahaha.

We also went for a 40 minutes IMAX documentary about pyramids, mummies and Pharohs. Whoo it was interesting! I still remember when I was small my parents brought me to the IMAX theater for some galaxy documentary. OMG boring.

And our ticket included entrance to the DAT (Digital Art & Technology) exhibition. A pity Cher and Juliana had to leave early, because the DAT exhibition was even more fun than the already fun Science Centre exhibits! We spent quite some time there, and it was tiring. There's this really cool exhibit there! There are like two make-shift rooms side by side, and in each room there's a bed with pillows and blanket, and a tv screen. So when one person lie on a bed in Room 1, you can see the person's image on the bed in Room 2. So you can like smack at strangers using the pillows. Or sit on them. Because when you sit on them or smack them, it will be reflected on the tv screen, and it looks damn real. Haha. So you can guess what we childish people were doing. And there's another exhibit that has this cool gadget, which everyone holds on to one side. Then you can start tapping at each other and hear different sounds! The more musically-inclined would make music I suppose, we were just creating a ruckus by hitting each other enthusiastically. Haha.

We left the Science centre at 9pm in the end, to go for dinner. Because it was closing. We ddn't even finish looking at all the exhibits! And we started at 3 plus. LOL. But it was super fun..and interesting..and fasincating..etc etc etc. I enjoyed myself thoroughly! (: I think its been a long time since I had such good fun. So I highly recommend this place, especially to those who haven't been there since primary school, just like us! And of course, must go with fun people, even better if they're a 自high bunch. Haha!

The only group picture, and it turned out all dark. Tsk. Can't even see Cher's and Juliana's faces. -.-

Hope it was a memorable 19th birthday for Serene! (:

I know this is rather late, but still.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SINGAPORE!

Hope everyone enjoyed National Day! (: I spent mine moving stuff to hall, and going down to Popular to get some stuff for school before meeting Nat and Janesa to have dinner plus watch fireworks. Well, all I got to say is, its quite an experience. Its either be at the parade itself, or stay home to watch the parade for subsequent years now. Hahaha. Yes it was that bad, it was like some sweat-inducing exercise to squeeze with the crowd. And its not even to watch the parade, its just watching the fireworks. Though I got to admit, the fireworks display was so nice that it almost made everything worth it! (: Sorry about my limited vocabulary, but yeah, it was really NICE. It made me feel happy watching it. (: Kids all around were flaunting the star-shaped lights that their mummy/daddy got for them at the Padang area, but we didn't manage to get one. (I’m still sore about that, I really wanted the white one!) It did occur to me to snatch from one of the more-proudly-waving-the-light-around kids, but I figured their parents will probably hunt me down if I did that. Oh well. Not worth risking my life for some light stick.

I still remember National Day celebrations in the past, they were actually kind of fun, in a cheesy sort of way.

In kindergarten, we would get like small goodie bags on celebration day, and they usually include sweets, chocolates, and of course, a mini Singapore flag! Memory fails me as to what we did to celebrate though. I guess goodie bags with food in it were more memorable to me then. LOL.

In primary school, there would be some performances in the form of celebration, and then major sing-along session in the hall, to that same few National Day songs. Oh, my favourite song to sing to was the one that goes “We are Singapore, we are Singapore, we will stand together hear the lion ROAR!” Thus I would sing along with patriotic pride (or perhaps it was just because I thought that song was really fun to sing to). It was quite nice hearing the entire school singing together.

In secondary school, the celebration is not much different from primary school. Except that I didn't like the song mentioned above that much anymore. Haha! But I remember when National Day was nearing, the Singspiration on Friday mornings would be used instead to teach us the National Day song of that particular year. I don't think we were very enthusiastic. Celebrations were so-so. It was only in the Upper Sec that celebrations became more fun. Maybe its due to the fact that I was in uniformed group, so I got to join them during the celebration when I got to Upper Sec, and I could see that they were so much more enthusiastic than the classes. Thus with them, I really had fun. (: And because the celebrations were only half-days, we would definitely make plans to go out after that! Hahaha. Since its GM, there's only that few places that we would always go (Bugis, Suntec, Tampines Mall etc; the few near Aljunied lah).

Strangely, I can't seem to remember much of what we did for National Day during JC. I have no idea why. Its either I didn't go to school, or I didn't enjoy myself thoroughly, or the stuff that we did was really not memorable at all. Hmm. Someone please enlighten me as to what we did for National Day celebration. LOL.

Now that we no longer have such celebrations, I think I sort of missed them. Like I said, they were fun in a cheesy way. We might say that the programme or whatever is stupid. And I just realised there's plenty of singing done to celebrate. But at the end of the day, I think I did have fun with my friends after all. (:

P.S: Because school has started and I haven't updated in days, plus this is the first year we're not having a National Day celebration, I'm feeling kind of nostalgic. The uniform days!
