To be honest, I was actually quite excited about this book because I heard rave reviews about it. It was a No. 1 bestseller or something like that. And when I saw the book in bookstores, I was dying to get it because I really like the book cover. HAHAHA. But its a nice book cover!! So anyway I got the book after my exams. AND GUESS WHAT. SO DISAPPOINTING. Its kind of a lame book actually. I have no idea what's the big deal with this book. I was expecting it to be Anne Rice-like, but no it wasn't. I guess I would have liked it back during secondary school though.
For the benefit of those who don't know about this series by Stephenie Meyer, she actually wrote 3 books already. Namely, Twilight (as shown here), New Moon, and Eclipse. The books are from the female main character's POV, Bella. To be very brief, the series is about her getting to know a family of vampires and falling in love with one of the cute ones, Edward. All in all, Bella just makes me roll my eyes. Argh. I can't stand the fact that she is soo in love with Edward. No, actually being in love is fine. But the way she behave its like, Edward, Edward, Edward. Her whole life revolves around him. So in New Moon, when Edward left, she was like moping around. -roll eyes- That part was darn boring. Anyway, the emotions portrayed in the book are so unrealistic. Plus the way the plot moves is quite fan-fiction, in my opinion. I hope Stephenie Meyer's fans don't come after me, man. Haha. So far, I don't think I've heard anyone criticising this series. /: But I just don't like it. Maybe I'm weird, I don't know
My sister loves it though. I only bought Twilight, but she couldn't stand not completing the whole thing so she went ahead to buy New Moon and Eclipse. LOL. But even she agrees that they're not very good reads, she just thinks they're entertaining. -.- Since she bought them, I thought I'll just finish it up. I'm done with New Moon already. I guess I don't mind reading them, but gosh, I can't get over the fact that its seriously very fan-fiction.
And now they're going to have a movie based on this popular bestseller. Twilight will be released in December 2008. I hope the movie will be better than the book. At least for a movie, it can't be too fanfic right?? (: Bella will be acted by Kristen Stewart, and Edward will be acted by Robert Pattinson, aka Cedric Diggory! HAHAHA. I wonder how the movie will turn out.
Moral of the story: Do not judge a book by its cover, literally.
On a side note, I watched The Virgin Suicides this afternoon! And that was a good movie! I am going to kope the soundtrack from Nat now. Haha! *looks through her LJ posts*
Edit: Ah I wanted to show you guys the covers of New Moon and Eclipse. But the images like got something wrong. Oh well nevermind. (:
I've finished 19 Minutes by Jodi Picoult. OMG it was good. Like, better than the few other books of hers that I've read, namely Second Glance, Salem Falls and Perfect Match. Some people might find her overrated or whatever, but 19 Minutes really touched my heart.
Its basically about a guy named Peter Houghton, who grew up being bullied by the kids around him, just because he wasn't part of them, he didn't fit in with the popular crowd. Some kids who don't fit in get ignored by everyone else, but Peter was constantly picked on. So I think school really sucked for him. I mean, if you are always sought after just to be picked on, like everyday, you will be quite traumatised right? From kindergarten all the way to high school please. He had a best friend called Josie Cormier, who had always stuck with him from kindergarten. But when they went high school, she started to be with the 'cool' crowd. So she ignores him and everything, and even pretend that they've never been friends. Now, Peter is the geek that we always see in movies, like the kind super pro in computer stuff, HTML and everything? I think its some virtual escape for him. He designed a video game called 'Hide and Shriek', in which you get to choose a character (all misfits for you to choose), and you score points by shooting the jocks and the 'popular' crowd. So he gets bullied everyday, but the last straw was when he wrote a love letter to Josie via email, and one of Josie's friends saw the email while Josie was not in the room. And that stupid friend went to forward the mail to the whole school. You can guess how bad the teasing was and the worst thing is, Josie acted like one of those who were always mean to Peter. So one fine day, Peter went to school and started shooting, just like his game. 10 died and 19 were wounded.
Okay I shall not say too much in case there are some of you who want to read it, like...Belle or Janesa? LOL. But its really a good book! (:
The whole plot unfolded as a court case, with trials and everything. Picoult shows everyone's side of the story, including Peter and Peter's parents. The story shows how the victims are always sympathized, but here you'll sympathize with Peter too. The past and the present is interwoven perfectly, and I think it really shows how the past affected the present. And there's like a slight twist near the end. I like how she wrote, and the whole reality of it.
