I am back from watching Beauty World! (: And to all those who aren't going to watch it, ahhh you're missing out! Because my money was totally worth it. I bought the $80 ticket, I think it was Category 2. For those who wants to catch it, 3rd, 4th and 5th are considered previews, so the pricing is $110(VIP), $90, $80, $60, $40, $25(Restricted view). After the preview nights, the tickets are a little more expensive. Oh and there's 10% discount for students. (:
I shall not lie to myself or to you all that everything was perfect. Firstly, because today was like the first night that they're performing in front of an audience, I'm guessing it won't be as good as it might be after performing for a week? I'm just guessing lah, since there might be newbies in the cast this time (like Daren Tan). Secondly, I didn't like the ending. I will not spoil it for you guys, but it wasn't like how I expected, or wanted it to be. ): Oh well. Lastly, Daren Tan as Ah Hock was a bit stiff and wasn't really natural. Ah Hock is supposed to be an Ah Beng, yes, but I think he's supposed to be a nice gentleman at heart too. At least, that was how I imagined him to be when I read the story/script/whatever of Beauty World from a library book that comprised several local plays ages ago. So, I wasn't too impressed with his acting, that portrayed Ah Hock as a one-dimensional character who's just Beng and in love with Ivy. I thought he could use more variations in tone and actions. But since its his first time doing theatre, or even acting, I shall cut him some slack. I guess it wasn't that bad as a first-timer. Just that Ah Hock is supposed to be one of the main characters too, so I can't help but notice. I hope I'm not being too harsh in judging his acting. /: Anyway, I think he should loosen up and relax more, maybe that'll help a little.
But OMG it was great! So fun, I enjoyed it. (: "Cabaret! Beauty World! Cha Cha Cha!" HAHAHA. The main female lead, Elena Wang acting as Ivy Chan Poh Choo, CAN REALLY SING. I love her voice, its like crystal clear, man. She acted her small town girl role really well. Same goes for the No.1 Cabaret girl, LuLu, acted by Denise Tan. Haha, that bitchy role is so darn believable. Acting chops aside, Beauty World was like really one big comedy. It was freaking hilarious. At first I was quite bothered by all the Singlish accents that are quite in your face, but then later I realised that since the setting is Singapore, and in the 60s', it makes sense for them to speak with those accents. The Singlish accent adds on to the comical element of the musical. Like, seriously. Haha. And there are a few cheesy scenes that are super funny. Ivy's penpal, Rosemary, was quite funny, with her "Goodness gracious!" and there was this scene that made everyone cheer and clap for her. Haha. Irene Ang acting as some cleaner called Wan Choo was genius please. Her random spouts of Cantonese and Canto accent were damn hilarious. Frankie, played by Dwayne Tan, was comical as well, almost on par with Wan Choo. Okay, actually its his love song for Ivy that's funny. And as for all the dialogue, and stage setting, needless to say they were good lah. I mean, all that humour...must be the dialogue right? (: About the music and the songs, I loved it. The band was *thumbs up*. It should be quite difficult trying to coordinate with the actors/actresses. And the band wasn't placed below like most plays/musicals that I've seen. (: You must see where they place the band and how they make the band like really part of the musical. There are some fun songs, some hilarious ones, some that touched my heart. You have to watch it for yourself to know what I'm talking about. The flow of the plot was nice, it didn't feel draggy for me, even though it started at about 8.10pm or 8.15pm, and ended at about 11pm, with an interval of 20 minutues. I didn't feel bored or sleepy at ANY point of Beauty World. Overall, a super fun musical to watch! Catch it, people! (:
